Doughnuts to Go!

By Bob Nelson

L=Left Turn BL=Bear Left X=Cross
R=Right Turn GF=Gaily Forward XU=Cross Under
BR=Bear Right eor=end of road XA=Cross Above

This segment was part of a longer ride we did to the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadow Corona Park. The doughnuts at the Steinway Bake Shop were sublime, however, and merit a cue sheet all their own!

L Onto Park Drive East, from the Boathouse in Central Park.
X 110th St. leaving the park.
R 112th St. (We're not taking 110th because it becomes one-way the wrong way after the Duke Ellington statue on Fifth Ave.)
L Third Ave.
R 124th St. Follow to Triboro Bridge bike path on-ramp, which should be just to the right of the 124th St. auto on-ramp.
GF Cross da bridge, going east. Not as much glass as there used to be.
R Bike path dumps you onto Randall's Island. Follow perimeter drive around like a backwards "C"; there are also yellow arrows on pavement left by Transportation Alternatives for one of their rides. You can see the bike path from the ground once you get to the right side of the bridge.
L Onto on-ramp for next leg of Triboro, going south. There are two sets of stairs where you will have to carry your bike. Enjoy the views.
L Coming off bridge, onto Hoyt St./Astoria Blvd. Stay to right.
R Steinway. Less than five minutes to doughnuts!

STOP at 28-08 Steinway, just south of the intersection of 28th and Steinway, for Steinway Bake Shop, whose awning reads: "Where Butter Makes the Difference." Does it ever! Light, flaky doughnuts filled with pastry cream are a well-known specialty here, and they sell out by 10:30 a.m. at the absolute latest. (The cream-filled doughnuts that also have a chocolate glaze are gone by about 9:30 a.m.) Mine was rich and smooth, the freshest pastry cream I've ever had, topped off with a bottle of chocolate milk. Leave room for seconds; I had a vanilla-glazed doughnut and Richard Brause followed his cream doughnut with a chocolate croissant. The bakery is tiny, so plan to have a seat on the curb or take your treat to a park bench nearby, if it lasts that long. If this place doesn't keep you happy, there is ANOTHER local bakery across the street, called Natale's. We weren't quite in peak training to take on two of them at once, but maybe next time.

HOME: reverse the route, taking the same bike path over the bridge. The east-side ramp on the bridge from Queens to Randall's Island is closed (1/02), so you have to take the west ramp, but you can take the bike path on either side going from Randall's to Manhattan.
