Shop 'til you drop at Ikea

Bikes are welcome on ferries. From Manhattan, we have to board
downstairs on the car level; from Staten Island we board upstairs with the
passengers but then we have to carry our bikes downstairs. Go figure. Most
ferries have something characterized as a snack bar but calling what they sell
"food" is a stretch.
Really important: about the 1.8 mile segment on Truck Routes 1 & 9,
traffic is light on Sundays but there's no shoulder and the two drawbridges do
have steel grid surfaces. I'm somewhat comfortable in this sort of setting and
my bike's bright red. Should you be similarly comfortable? That's your call; I
can't say. I scouted the ride on a bike with 700x32 cyclocross tires. Are
skinny road tires adequate? Again, I can't say but knobby off-road tires are
probably excessive.
